It is understandable that pregnant women are concerned
about seeking dental treatment because of the
fear to what may happen to the fetus. Thus they
do not seek treatment until there is sever pain,
swelling or infection. Therefore it is advisable
to visit your dentist before planning to get pregnant
because pregnant patients' are prone to develop
advanced gum disease which in many cases present
with very little symptoms and is very difficult
to rebuild the destructed tissue after formed.
Dental treatment is safe for the pregnant women
& her baby. On the contrary dental infections
& gum disease has been implicated in low weight
babies & fetal abnormalities. The issue of
treating pregnant women is still a sensitive matter
many dentists prefer to treat in the 3rd to 6th
month to make sure that most of the organs of
the fetus has been developed. However, studies
have proven no harm will arise to the mother &
the fetus by dental treatment. The same applies
for breast feeding mother dental treatment is
safe for breast feeding mothers. Therefore, Emergency
dental treatment for pregnant women in pain must
not be postponed and can be done at any time during
the pregnancy without harming the mother or the
fetus.
Finally just a word of advise for women on
the verge of marriage & have not visited the
dentist. You should at least seek your local
dentist to obtain advise about your dental condition
to allow the dentist to guide you to an improved
oral health before getting married & pregnant.
This also can be considered as part of the grooming
process before marriage by improving the appearance
of the teeth & getting rid of bad breath.
Medical problems associated with pregnancy, e.g. diabetes, hypertension,
,,, etc may require a report or cooperation of the
gynacologist.
